Interactive Google Activity "Fast Food Analysis"
Teens and fast food go hand-in-hand. It is so important that the youth of our generation learn about the nutritional value (or lack of) of their favorite fast food restaurants in order for them to make informed decisions about their health! Incorporate this as an activity/assignment along side your own lesson! - Or check out my Nutrition and Wellness Curriculum that has corresponding lessons!
Assignment Goal:
This is a 3 task assignment that taps into higher order thinking skills of applying, analyzing, and evaluating.
In task 1, students are asked to read the article "How Fast Food Affects Nutrition in Teens". They are instructed to write 2 (4-6 sentence) paragraphs summarizing the article, and describing what they learned from the article.
In task 2, students are instructed to research 3 fast food restaurants nutritional facts, using the fastfoodnutrition.org website. They are instructed to create a meal that they would typically eat there and identify the calories, fat, sodium, cholesterol, carbs, fiber, sugar, and protein in each menu item. Students will add up the totals for each meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), then they will add up the totals for the entire day.
In task 3, students are instructed to analyze the daily recommended values for a typical person who consumes 2,000 calories a day and reflect on their totals from the fast food restaurants. In the final analysis question, students are asked the following: "Based on what you know about health and nutrition, do you believe the fast food items you selected for the day are providing you with the key nutrients you need to feel properly fueled?"
